Painting Trees

Outer Trees
1. The two trees with foliage are tackled in the same way
2. Loosely mix the yellow and blue and wash in the shapes of the foliage
3. Leave some gaps especially near the outer edges of the tree
4. While still wet add a stronger mix with at bit more blue in it to the darker parts of the foliage
5. Allow the paint to dry
6. Add the trunk and branches using Burnt Umber
7. Add blue to the wet paint to create dark shadows
Middle Tree
1. This tree is painted with a rigger brush using a mix of Burnt umber and Ultramarine
2. Paint the tree in the same direction it grows, from the ground up
3. Paint the trunk and the main branches first, then start to add progressively smaller branches and twigs
4. Start to lift the brush as it travels up the page, this thins the lines for the smaller branches and the tone starts to lighten as the amount of paint on the brush reduces.
5. Don't forget to paint a bit of the ground under the trees
